Adding Edible Glitter with ONLY Edible Glitter
If you only have Edible Glitter on hand when decorating your cookies - don't worry! You can absolutely add edible glitter to cookies with ease. The trick is to wait for the cookies to "crust over" and then add the sparkles. You need that "skin" on the cookie, so the sparkles don't fall too far below your royal icing. You want them to really POP, so it's best to add when the cookie has just crusted over.
However, if you're working with a cookie icing that is very THICK, then it's fine to add the edible glitter immediately.
If you're wondering what Edible Glitter is made of, we can discuss that too! FDA compliant Edible Glitter is made of a natural mineral called mica and, FDA compliant food colors. The mica provides that gorgeous "glitter" affect, and it is 100% approved by the FDA for consumption.
Now, there are products out there like Disco Dust which is actually defined as "non-toxic" - but understand that does NOT mean edible or safe for consumption. In the early 2000's the United States FDA ruled that Disco Dust could come into contact with food, but should only be used as an accent piece (think, cake topper) that is removed prior to consumption.
With DiamonDust, you can spray or sprinkle it right on the cookie and it is safe to consume! That is why DiamonDust was such a trailblazer product in 2019, and now you can find similar products everywhere.
To really know when a product is 100% edible and FDA Compliant, you want to look for these 3 things on the label:
- List of ingredients
- Lot #
- Expiration Date
If any (or all) are missing from the product label, then it is safe to assume it is not intended for consumption. When shopping edible glitter online, it should provide the detailed ingredient list. Lot #'s and Expiration Dates will vary based on the date of manufacturing, and they are required to be printed on the label itself.
If a product states "non-toxic" you should reach out to the company selling it or the manufacturer and request all 3 items above. If they are unable to provide the information from the label, then it's safe to assume it should not be consumed.
Best practice is to shop FDA COMPLIANT edible glitter and luster dusts.
As proud USA manufacturers for over 3 decades, you can be CONFIDENT when shopping The Sugar Art's Luster Dust and Edible Glitter!
Adding Edible Glitter to Fully Dried Cookies + The Color Solution
Now, we understand cookie decorating can be quite a task - especially if it's a large order! So you may not have the time to wait for cookies to "crust over" and add edible glitter to cookies.
Well - this is where the amazing Color Solution can help! By using The Color Solution as an adhering agent, you can add edible glitter to cookies at any time. But understand, the cookies needs to be fully dried in order for this technique to work adequately.
Just paint a thin layer of The Color Solution and then sprinkle the glitter on top of that area. Our small shaker jars are perfect for this application, but you can also use a detailed food-safe brush to apply the glitter more specifically.
